Quilceda Creek
“Palengat” Cabernet Sauvignon

quilceda creek washington state palengat cabernet sauvignon

The 2019 Quilceda Creek Palengat Cabernet Sauvignon Mach One Vineyard Clone 685 represents a new direction for “Palengat,” one of two member-exclusive, single clone Cabernet Sauvignons from the stunning Mach One Vineyard. This is the first time we have produced single clone bottlings of Cabernet, and we couldn’t have asked for a better vintage. Above average temperatures and historically low vineyard yields resulted in wines of exceptional quality in 2019.

Mach One, a unique and stunning site overlooking the Columbia River in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, was planted in 2010 to experiment with French Cabernet clones 685 and 412. It was the first time these two clones were planted in Washington State, and we chose to plant the vines on their own rootstock, allowing them to grow and express themselves in a more natural and distinct way. What began as an experiment proved to be such a resounding success that we decided to showcase each clone on its own.

A tribute to our co-founder, Jeannette Golitzin, whose maiden name is Palengat, the 2019 Quilceda Creek Palengat Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Clone 685 Cabernet Sauvignon from Mach One Vineyard. In addition to being a single vineyard, single varietal, single clone bottling, the 2019 “Palengat” is an expression of barrels from a single artisanal cooperage, completing our longstanding vision for this wine. Deep purple-black in color, the nose has a wonderful perfume of blueberry, plum and cassis fruit. Nuances of lavender, leather, chocolate, minerals and spice coat the palate. It has a very singular personality, with great purpose, and is unquestionably the best “Palengat” to date. Drink 2023-2043.

"Coming all from Clone 685 and the Mach One Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, brought up in new oak, the 2019 Palengat is deep and dense, with ripe black fruits, crushed stone, tobacco, espresso, lead pencil, and graphite all soaring from the glass. It's a bigger, richer, more structured wine with lots of ripe tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great, great finish. It's another seriously good, borderline perfect wine in the lineup."

"The 2019 'Palengat' impresses right out of the gate. It is every bit as sensational as last years release, as it offers incredibly perfumed aromas of blackberries, plums and cassis along side, graphite, dried savory herbs, cocoa powder and exotic spices that are nearly impossible to resist. On the palate this is just as impressive, displaying a stunning combination of elegance and power, as it offers a gorgeous full-bodied texture that is utterly seamless. It is beautifully structured with fine dusty tannins that frame its ripe core, which is laced with dark currants, graphite dust and roasted coffee flavors that push through effortlessly on to the long sleek finish that brings it to a wonderful end. Today this is already showing remarkably well and a pleasure to approach, however it should also go on to offer a drinking window that spans decades."

"A new wine for Quilceda Creek, the 2019 Palengat Mach One Vineyard Clone 685 is made from 100% clone 685 Cabernet Sauvignon, entirely sourced from the Mach One vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. The wine is beautifully floral, featuring red and dark rose petal tones alongside black currants, black tea and exotic spices. The palate is deep, concentrated and sinfully good, layers of ripe black and blue fruits colliding with minerals, scorched earth, tar and menthol undertones. The plush texture, light salinity and wonderful length add to the enjoyment. This beautiful wine has another 20 years ahead of it."

"Coming from the Mach One vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills, this new label is part of the clonal expression range that honors the family heritage. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Palengat Clone 685 begins with a bold expression of black and blue fruits on the firm, well-structured nose that emanates with elements of elegant oak. Full-bodied and with gobs of juicy, ripe, black raspberry and dark cherry tones, the palate overflows with flavors of savory herbs, bitter dark chocolate and a hint of smoke, followed by a delightful lift of roasted red bell pepper and fine-grained tannins across the mid-palate. The wine continues to evolve in the mouth over the long, winding and powerful finish. It's still tight, so additional aging in the cellar will help before opening the bottle."
