1993
Quilceda Creek
Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
This was an exciting new offering for us because it was the first time our entire production was crafted in the highly acclaimed reserve style. Until this vintage, our reserve wines were small experimental lots (50 to 75 cases) of Cabernet Sauvignon produced in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1992. They incorporated several changes into our winemaking process and the results more than met our expectations. By the 1993 vintage, we were confident to craft the entire vintage in the reserve style.
Key components of the reserve are its 100 percent reliance on Cabernet Sauvignon and what evolved to be 22 months of barrel age. At release, the 1993 was a dark ruby-purple with an aromatic profile of black cherry, cedar, smoke, vanilla, and spice. A dense, powerful wine, it was full bodied and expansive, with a wonderfully layered impression on the palate. The tannin structure was intended to get it well into the new millennium and it ably succeeded: The wine was delicious on release and continued to evolve. We made 1,300 cases.
